~She’s a brick… November 10, 2008

Filed under: House — Annette @ 4:56 pm

So on Friday we bought a house at auction. One minute we were renters, and approximately 3.2 minutes later, we owned a house. All in all, a very surreal experience.

The house was built in the 1930s, but is brick and structurally in fairly amazing shape. Inside, it was like walking through a time machine to the 1940s. The previous owner was an older woman (who just recently died) who had lived there since the 40s. Nothing had been updated since the 40s. Ringer washer and everything. We are now the (not so) proud owners of a 1940s-50s fridge, gas stove and gigantic deep freeze. Oh, and a clawfoot tub. We will be selling those. Oh, and everything inside is seafoam green.

As I said, structurally the house is in great shape, but obviously it needs the serious updating it’s missed for the past 7 decades. Last night we made a list of the top 45 priorities (seriously) of things that need to be done to the house. They’re all very check off-able, but it’ll take some time.

Part of the reason we were so interested in it was because of where it’s located. It’s in a neighbourhood we didn’t think we’d be able to live in for years, but all of a sudden this popped up. We can still walk to work, and we’re surrounded by wealthy old people. Good deal.

We wondered if we would find someone to sublet our apartment from us (which we have until next August), but I posted the ad on Craigslist this morning and have already had 3 serious inquiries. Popular area.

Anyway, here she is in all her glory. Please excuse the ugly siding on the front (they closed in the brick front porch for no apparent reason – that will be removed) and the old woman awning.

And here is an artist’s rendition (aka Charlie and Illustrator) of what it will look like after we get the front porch restored and a back deck built. Minus the red door; I’m not really digging that.

We don’t even have wi-fi at our apartment now. 🙂 In fact, I haven’t even reinstalled an OS on my laptop since I formatted it in July.
