Cindy had a few weeks’ head start on me and just harvested her first spinach last night. How cool.

My project yesterday was putting in some flower beds where I planted some very cute dwarf sunflowers. I can hardly wait the 50-60 days. And maybe I’ll even be able to harvest some sunflower seeds from them for good eatin’!

Why would you pick off the first blooms?

  2. Annette Says:

You want the plant to put its energy into getting established in the soil, rather than setting fruit. For some strawberries you only have to pick the flowers for the first six weeks, but for others you pick them for the entire first season. Fruits are a long-term investment, and for most you don’t get any fruit for the first several years.
